Goa Gambling Tax Contributions
Since 2012, India casinos in Goa contributed a total of US$175 million (1,227.29 crores) to the local economy in state taxes. Goa’s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, presented information to the House last week, reporting that 785.5 crores (US$108 million) has come from offshore casinos and 491.8 crores (US$67.5 million) from land resorts.
Legal Changes for Goa Residents
But despite success and contribution to the local economy, the future for India’s casinos is uncertain. Sawant recently announced that authorities may change current draft rules. This change would only allow tourists to enter casinos, banning Goa residents from gambling.
The Goa Gambling Act oversees all casino operations in the state but the amendment could mean that residents cannot enter resorts in the future. In a statement, Sawant said: “I had assured on the floor of the House that Goans would be banned from entering casinos.” He also added: “we are going to implement the assurance from February 1.”
Relocation of Mandovi Casinos
The state has a total of seven off-shore or ‘floating’ casinos, located on the Mandovi River in the Panaji area. Authorities are currently discussing the relocation of these Indian casinos but are yet to find a suitable venue for them. The home department has announced that the floating sites can operate in their current location until March 31, 2021. However, if an alternative site is found earlier, these off-shore casinos will move to fixed locations.
