UEFA Euro 2020 postponed due to the Covid wave is now scheduled for 11 June to 11 July 2021. A Casualty of the pandemic and a year late, it will still retain the “UEFA Euro 2020” tag. This is the 16th UEFA European Championship. The tournament will be hosted across 12 cities across Europe to celebrate 60 years of the European Championship.
The cities that will host the matches are London, Rome, Glasgow, Bilbao, Dublin, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Baku, Budapest, Bucharest, Saint Petersburg and Munich with semi-finals and finals to be held at the Wembley stadium in London.
24 teams are all geared up to win the trophy as the countdown to the finals begin. Italy will kick off the tournament against Turkey at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome
The groups and teams for the tournament are
Group A: Turkey, Italy, Wales, Switzerland
Group B: Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Russia
Group C: Netherlands, Ukraine, Austria, North Macedonia
Group D: England, Croatia, Scotland, Czech Republic
Group E: Spain, Sweden, Poland, Slovakia
Group F: Hungary, Portugal, France, Germany
With England, France, and Belgium being touted as the clear favorites to win the tournament with the highest odds, there are a few teams who could have surprises up their sleeves. These dark horse teams are:
Turkey reached the semi-finals of the 2002 World Cup and also Euro 2008 and for Euro2020 they have a top-notch coach Senol Gunes and a team of young players in great form. With odds of 50 to 1, Turkey does have the potential to cause an upset to the tournament which will be an extraordinary feat for this football-crazy country.
Turkey plays in Group A with Italy, Wales, and Switzerland, none of whom should be impossible to beat.
Poland has huge odds of 80 /1 to win the Euro 2020 tournament, but even then, it’s better not to underestimate the team since they have Robert Lewandowski as their captain.
The Bayern Munich player Robert Lewandowski has proved that he is arguably the best striker in the world right now, incomparable to any other player in the world. With nearly 30 goals to his name this season, Robert can lead Poland through a historic tournament.
Sweden might not have the most talented team in the tournament, but they do have a highly competitive team that has manages to reach semi-finals and quarter-finals before. The team has some young talented players like Isak, Dejan Kulusevski, and Mattias Svanberg, as well as experienced older players Sebastian Larsson, Emil Forsberg, Robin Quaison, and Marcus Berg
With odds of 80/1, they may seem to be the underdogs at the championship, but their effective defense play can make them the dark horses to watch out for at Euro 2020
Portugal lifted the championship trophy at Euro2016 for the first time defeating Hosts and two-time winners, France. However, despite being the reigning champions, the odds on their team to win Euro 2020 is 8/1. This is surprising as they have a very strong team. With players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Diogo Jota, they still have to power to retain the Cup.
